The Internet Paid Me $300 Today!
First of all - let me confess 3 things to you.
- I’m a new home owner.
- I know virtually NOTHING about home repair. I AM NOT mechanical and/or handy!
- I’m a nerd / geek!
When something goes wrong in our house - I see $$$ - because I know I’d usually have to call someone to fix it!
Well NOT today! Today the Internet paid me! How you might ask? Well let me tell you!
Our Garbage Disposal stopped working - and those $$$ made an appearance!
I did everything I knew how to do - which is almost nothing!
This involved:
- Putting my hand down in it - which ALWAYS freaks me out - and cleaning out anything that might be in there.
- Making sure the breaker didn’t need reset.
- And hitting the Reset Button on the bottom of the disposal (Don’t be impressed! I learned that one the last time it stopped working. Luckily the repair guy wasn’t here for that - and didn’t even charge me!).
So when those 3 steps failed - I went to my good old friend Google!
A simple search of “Garbage Disposal Repair” and Ta Da - I was in business! One of the article said you could take a broom handle and move the mechanism around in the case of it not spinning (Which is the problem I was having). I did - and after doing so it spun right up and was working again!
Now you know how the Internet Paid - or rather SAVED - me $300 today!
And by the way - I DID have a reason for telling you that story!
Do you have something you can do (Like tell someone how to repair a Garbage Disposal…) or something you’re into to? It doesn’t matter if you take people to the bottom of the Grand Canyon on a donkey or if you’re selling the first seats to fly commercially into space - there’s a niche out there just waiting to be conquered by you!
Can you imagine turning your knowledge and passions into an income? You CAN!
And if you do it right - you can even get HUGE Tax Benefits from doing so!
You may even be able to Work From Home full-time at some point doing what you love!

Aww - Don’t you just love home repair?!?
I’ve owned my own home for 18 years (actually this is the third). I just did a major home renovation. It always is more than you think. More $$$ unexpected electrical or plumbing costs, things that you see that you just HAVE to have like a garbage disposal that wasn’t part of the plan…
Great post, cute story. And yes it does bring the point across about sharing knowledge online
All the Best in your home owning adventure

I’m a nerd too but my cheapskate outweighs my nerdiness when it comes to home repair. I’ve had to fix a stove (cracked screw), a dishwasher (burnt out solenoid) and a furnace (crusty flame sensor) and I did it all with teh internets. Bob Villa’s site is actually a pretty good source of info.
If you ever get into the same garbage disposal situation, there is a hole in the bottom of the disposal (near the reset button?) that an allan key can fit into. There may even be an allan key hanging somewhere under the sink (on the side of the cupboard or on the side of the disposal itself). Insert key and turn for the same results (without grossing up your broom).

Very helpful story and I myself altho do not have a garbage disposal ( I have to take out the garbage the old fashion way} when my sink gets stopped up I takes a long wire coat hanger and stick it in the hole and whisk it arond and often I can oick up what is stoping the drain up with the hook at the end of the coat hanger. Does this make sense?? ha ha ha well it does work. it has for me anyway.. Just thought Id let you in on this . Smile.
