Have you ever heard the Starfish Story?
As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, picking up starfish one by one and tossing each one gently back into the water.
It made a difference for THAT one.
He came closer still and called out, “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”
The young man paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean.”
The old man smiled, and said, “I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?”
To this, the young man replied, “The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”
Upon hearing this, the elderly observer commented, “But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!”
The young man listened politely. Then he bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it into the back into the ocean past the breaking waves and said, “It made a difference for that one.”
It’s very difficult to make a difference sometimes! Of course – it’s very easy too! It all depends on where you DECIDE to stand.
I spoke about the word DECIDE in the post, “FitRULES | Day 34“. Here’s the excerpt:
When it comes to DECIDING on ANYTHING – I want you to think about something one of my mentors – John Addison – talks about. If you think about the words Homicide, Pesticide, and Algicide – there’s one thing in common. The death of something. It’s the same thing with Decide. When you DECIDE – it’s the death of ALL other options!
So believing and deciding it’s time for a healthier lifestyle – you HAVE to kill your old way of thinking and habits.
When I was thinking about this post – I put together some words that I felt went along with the overall concept of making a difference and the responsibility surrounding it. Here’s what I come up with.
Take a long look at each one – and reflect on what each one means.
As an animal lover – I have a real moral dilemma with eating meat (ESPECIALLY as it relates to the Factory Farming Industry). One – from the fact that I feel like a hypocrite, in that I’d never kill or butcher an animal myself. But in eating meat – I give it my OK by allowing others to do it. And two – I’d never allow someone or something I know to go through the lifelong (whatever short or long life that is) fear and torture these animals endure – yet I allow it for ones I don’t know.
So every time I don’t eat meat – I look at it as another starfish being thrown back into the water. It doesn’t change the entire industry – but it could very well affect ONE animal. And for THAT animal – it made a difference.
I don’t condone blocking traffic, disrupting the peace, and/or violent protest – but I DO condone standing up for what’s right.
When I scroll through Facebook – some of the images and stories break my heart. But feelings without action change NOTHING!
Instead of making a video calling people out for an ice bucket challenge – make the same video with a call to action on donating as well. Instead of watching a video about someone rescuing a kitten from traffic and liking it – give your time and/or charitable contributions to organizations that help animals.
Instead of watching a video about someone rescuing a kitten from traffic and liking it – give your time and/or charitable contributions to organizations that help animals.
Instead of getting mad when a business owner or CEO posts a picture of themselves with a dead trophy animal – encourage people to boycott their business, write letters to the editors of their local papers, and rally to stop the people/places that allow it to happen.
In a word – ACTION!
We can make a difference by standing up for what’s right!
