Every now and again a practice or product we’ve been doing and/or using for years gets a makeover, a new hip name, and some clever marketing – and causes us to look at it with a fresh set of eyes.
Examples?
Do you look something up on a search engine or do you Google it?
Do party goers get jazzed about the gelatin shots being served or the Jell-O Shots? And singing G-e-l-a-t-i-n isn’t nearly as fun or catchy as J-E-L-L-O!
Do you say cotton swab or Q-Tip?
And until someone comes up with a newer, better, and faster name for it – this is referred to as a “Brandomer”. That’s where a brand name has become synonymous in the public mind with a general class of product.
Now – telecommuting has its own Brandomer. Citrix – the powerhouse behind such great products as GoToMeeting, GoToWebinar, and GoToMyPC – is branding the process as “Work Shifting”.
On WorkShifting.com – they define their name as – “If you work from your home, out of coffee shops, hotels, and airports every bit as much as the office, workshifting is for you. Tips, reviews, and opinions on the world of web commuting are what work shifting is all about.”
Today on IWearYourShirt.com – the shirt of the day is for GoToMeeting and one of its (Citrix) employees. The employee being showcased is Kelley – who’s documenting her dream of a work shifting vacation through Western Europe on a Tandem Bike Sept.13 through Oct.06 2010 on KelleyChecksIn.com.
